Why do stories fascinate us? Tales of heroes, passion, gain, pain, love etc. I guess there could be multiple reasons for this fascination, one main reason amongst many, being how we relate to stories and in fictional characters see ourselves doing or getting things that are not possible in real life. Love stories indeed are the most popular ones be it in the form of print or drama. If you are a Pakistani drama fan you must have figured it out by now that I am talking about the new drama serial “Dillagi,” which is a love story intertwined with emotions such as ego, passion, power and much more.
The drama from the very beginning had some kind of an appeal to it. The characters are built up quite steadily and are doing justice to the respective roles be it the character of Saba Hameed as Mohid’s (hero) mother, who in my opinion is the strongest and most interesting character of the play or Anmol’s (heroine) mother’s role who is always at the edge of breaking down, though with a daughter like Anmol, that should have happened a long time ago.
Mehvish Hayat’s (Anmol) character is like that of a Rebel without a cause. Even after ten episodes one cannot figure out what is her problem but one does need to give her the credit that by far she has become the most annoying character of the play. Also I really wonder who did Mehvish Hayat’s wardrobe for this play? It is simply pathetic. Had it not been for the good looks that she has, she would have made a disaster looking like someone from the era of 1960 without any fashion sense.
Humayoun Saeed falls in and out of looking good and old, looking intense but at times expressionless. One wonders could it be the cause of multiple Botox treatments which desperately try to make Mr. Saeed look a bit young or is he losing his acting streaks. But then in the next scene he would deliver the most romantic dialogue in the most perfect manner that one would want to jump inside of the screen push annoying Anmol away and gladly take her place.
The supporting characters are also doing some what justice to their roles. Dastageer as Mohid’s chota brings life on screen with a little over dose of cheekiness. Anmol’s sister’s dialogues are quite reflective and shed light on the overall weave of the story. Mohid’s sister and brother in law can be seen as building blocks of the story which will be used as and when required. In short the story is interesting and one waits for the next episode.
Now that we have dissected the characters let’s look at other elements of the play. The famous mystery of Mohid’s sister’s deal with her mum still shrouds the play, they better have some solid reason for the feud between the mother in law (Saba Hameed) and the son in law. We do understand that Saba Hameed is shown as a matriarch but she also has a sensible side to her character which I hope is not tarnished trying to prove the cause of fight.
The latest episode was a bit slow in action but one can feel the built up to an important turn in the play and I hope that the director does not mess up the climax by dragging the play by unnecessarily adding more episodes.
The stories in most of the plays are the same but the difference that makes a play gripping and interesting is the play of words and situations. The real life dilemma often is that we forget to say the right thing on the right time but in dramas the director has that control in hand so Dillagi’s mushy but feel good dialogues are quite enjoyable and spot on.

Blast From the Past:
When a popular play is being aired one of the most followed trends is that people look at other plays of the same lead cast and so did I. While doing so I came across a serial from year 2009 aired on Hum TV by the name of “Meri Jaan.” It’s a murder mystery cum love story starring Humayoun Saeed and Nadia Jamil in the lead roles but the rest of the cast is also quite strong with Faisal Qureishi, Adnan Siddiqui, Shabbir Jaan, Deepak Parwani and Zainab Qayyum. It’s one of the very few murder mysteries that is ever produced and keeps one hooked from one episode to the other. I would say a good pass time.
