PUNJAB NAHI JAUNGI – TO WATCH OR NOT TO WATCH

Another strong collaboration of Six Sigma Films and ARY Films has taken the shape of a big-budget Pakistani romantic drama i.e. ‘Punjab Nahi Jaungi’. It stars the famous duo from the very successful ‘Jawani Phir Nahi Aani’ and ‘Dil Lagi’–Humayun Saeed and Mehwish Hayat, alongside the adorable Urwa Hocane, Azfar Rehman (a new-comer to the big screen), and the larger than life, Ahmed Ali Butt, as part of the supporting cast.

Director Nadeem Baig promises the audience to expect: the comeback of Sohail Ahmed to acting after a hiatus of 12 years, and a cameo from Behroze Sabzwari with his wife for the first time ever. ‘Javed Sheikh ne bohat koshish ki keh un ki behen na aaen screen per, magar ab ye bhi honay ja raha hai,’ commented Ahmed Ali Butt in his signature tone, as he questioned the director and cast of the movie before the trailer launch.

Humayun’s character is depicted as one of a very typical village man hailing from The Punjab, who is rather self-obsessed and a macho at heart. Mehwish Hayat, on the other hand, is a modern Karachiite, who has just returned from London after completing her education. While Humayun’s character is initially in love with Urwa’s character, and Mehwish plans to marry Azfar (at least in the movie!), a series of events causes their lives to intertwine so that deception, hatred, love and power bring out the best and worst of their human side.

As the trailer unfolds, one sees Urwa taking everyone’s breath away with an ‘item’ song. However, like most previous dance numbers seen in Pakistani films, this one too, has a very Bollywood appeal to it. On the contrary, we hope that the rest of the soundtrack from the film may prove to be otherwise as we heard traces of what sounded like some potentially catchy numbers. We might just as well be getting a new upbeat mehendi song to show off our moves to, with Shiraz Uppal treating us to some sentimental music to listen to on the radio while driving.

For some unfathomable reason, the make-up we see in the trailer is a bit of a turn-off. We have yet to discover why. Despite this, our gorgeous Pakistani actressses leave no chance to lure us towards the big screen with their unparalleled and stunning looks.

The first thought that crossed our minds after watching the trailer was ‘Yes’ (read: got to watch this movie!) Why?–Promising cinematography, a couple with sizzling on-screen chemistry, distinguished depiction of our Punjabi culture…aand Khalil-ur-Rehman. Yeah, that’s why! Oh and did I mention, we can’t wait to find out why ‘Mehwish Hayat Punjab nahi jayengi.’ ???

Pakistani cinema will witness two big film releases this Eid-ul-Adha – ‘Na Maloom Afraad 2’ and ‘Punjab Nahi Jaungi’. The question is-which one will you be watching?
