DIY Hair Masks = Deep Hair Conditioning

Our super-busy lifestyles often mean that our hair has to be ‘DONE’ at all times of the day or night. Stepping out for an early morning work meeting, coffee with friends, lunch date, the tailor’s (after all, you never know who you might bump into there), or a late night movie … our hair takes a beating with straighteners, curling irons, blow dryers, anti-frizz serums … the works! The age-old oil massage totka is of course, a great way to nourish the scalp and hair, but you can go one step further by applying a DIY hair mask at home. Hair masks help to deep condition and unfrizz hair from the root up. They also give respite to our hair from the deep heat treatments we subject them to when we stay on the go all day! So try these DIY Hair masks at home as we show you HOW to tame your tresses into feeling and looking softer, shinier, and happier!

1. Banana Hair Mask

Bananas are rich in potassium and vitamins, and they also contain about 75% water which is essential for hydrating the hair.

You will need:

2 overripe Bananas

A Silicone-free Conditioner (e.g. Suave Essentials/Naturals, or TRESSemme Undone)

1-2 tbsp. Honey

2 teaspoons Olive, Almond, or Argan oil.

Mix it:

Mash, or blend the bananas into a smooth puree. Sieve the seeds or they will get stuck in your hair. Make sure its a smooth paste without any lumps at all.

Take your conditioner, and add the banana puree to it.

Add the honey and oil.

Mix it properly and apply it to your hair in sections. This works better on damp or wet hair.

Wear a shower cap to help infuse it deeply.

Leave it on for half an hour to forty five minutes and rinse it out with luke warm water.

You can apply this hair mask after your regular hair-wash routine, to wet hair and then rinse out.

2. Avocado Hair Mask

Avocado is loaded with potassium (nearly twice as much as bananas). Avocados are high in vitamins B and E and proteins. This helps repair damage on the scalp, which may slow or prevent hair growth. Avocado locks moisture into hair cells, and strengthens hair roots, shaft and strands.

You Will Need:

½ over-ripe Avocado

¼ cup Mayo

2 tbsp Olive, or Almond oil

Rosemary or  Lavender essential oil (optional to combat the smell of the mayo)

Mix it:

Blend the avocado into a smooth paste

Add 1/4 cup of the organic mayo to it.

Now add the oils and mix it well.

You can also add your conditioner to the mixture, and 1 teaspoon of honey if you like. Honey is a humectant and helps moisturize the hair.

Add 2-3 drops of the Lavender EO or the Rosemary EO

(A word of caution: do not use essential oils if you are pregnant, and NEVER use them without diluting them in a carrier oil).

Apply this mixture to damp hair, and wear a shower cap.

You can also use warm air from your hair dryer to apply heat for better absorption.

(Please Note: Don’t apply direct heat and make sure you keep the dryer at a distance from the shower cap so you don’t end up overheating it.)

Rinse it out thoroughly after half an hour with lukewarm water.

3. Pumpkin + Honey Hair Mask

Pumpkins have lots of amazing benefits – they’re rich in vitamins A and C, beta-carotene, potassium, and zinc. Pumpkin promotes healthy hair growth and moisturizes the hair. This mask can also be used on the face for glowing skin.

You Will Need:

1-2 tablespoons Honey

1 cup Pumpkin Puree

Mix it:

Add 1-2 tablespoons honey (a natural humectant) to 1 cup pumpkin puree

Pack as much as you can onto your hair and scalp. Apply this mask to wet product free hair, this will benefit your hair more.

Wrap your hair in saran wrap or wear a shower cap to keep the mask in place.

Let it sit for at least 15-30 minutes and then rinse it out properly with lukewarm water.

TIPS & TIPS…

Battle Frizz with this Homemade Hairspray/Frizz Treatment

Mix 1 tsp sugar to filtered water.

Pour the mixture into your palms and run your hands through your dry hair.

Your hair will get a slight crunch and hold as this also works as a homemade hairspray. It helps control frizz and holds your hairstyle in place as well.

Say Bye Bye to Residue Build Up With The magical Aspirin

Residue and product build-up can dull and weaken your hair.

Crush one aspirin and add it to your shampoo, or conditioner.

Clean your scalp thoroughly.

The Salicylic acid in the aspirin helps remove build up, soothe the scalp and restore the shine. Don’t do this more than once in two weeks. Also, do a patch test before using any DIY treatment.

Did you Know that these Ingredients DO NOT SUIT Everyone’s Hair, and are considered to be protein mimickers?

Yes! If your hair is sensitive to some of these protein mimickers, they can cause your hair to tangle and make it frizzy. It’s also possible for your hair to like a particular ingredient in a particular season only, or it may not like it at all. Most protein mimickers don’t necessarily work well for everyone throughout the year. If your hair washing products contain any of these and you feel your tresses aren’t looking to happy, try striking them off your hair care routine for a few days.
