SIDEWAYS – Wood Fired Food in Singapore
We found a hidden gem in Singapore on 109 Rowell Road and you can thank us later!
Authentic Wood Fired Food and Freshly Baked Bread
Have you ever been to a restaurant in Singapore where they serve “authentic” wood-fired food with inspiration from southern Europe, the Mediterranean, Australian fusion styles and a touch of Asian ingredients? Well, we certainly hadn’t!
Why do we ask “authentic”? Most places that claim to be serving wood-fired breads aren’t actually using the wood-fired oven which you can see proudly standing in all its glory in the Sideways kitchen. There is more! Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free options are available so anyone and everyone can enjoy.
Why the name “Sideways”? We asked the owners. “Because of our way of being and doing things a little differently than anyone else.”
And last but not the least, they bake their own bread. Fresh, every morning, every day!
Pav Khialani, 33 is a Singaporean who spent 15 years in Melbourne, Australia as chef, coffee roaster, baker and entrepreneur who also runs The Hangar in Arab Street. Giulia Cian Seren, 27, Italo-Hungarian digital marketer who found her way back into F&B with The Hangar. Pav and Giulia both came together to launch Sideways in July 2018.
We wanted to serve great food but not just open up a foodie place. We didn’t want to be JUST about the drinks because we don’t want to be a bar and have that kind of a vibe either! We wanted to open a place that would welcome everyone, from any background, from families to couples to professionals.”
Sideways is a casual dining place. The interiors are very raw and rustic. And that too wasn’t by accident. The very layout; the tables, ovens, bar, all were conceptualized by Pav himself.
The restaurant shares a quirky space on the side about the same length as the restaurant space itself, with a creative agency. This space can be booked for hosting events, meetups, private parties etc.
Recommended dishes
JALAPENO HUMMUS: FRESH MINT, WOOD FIRED ROASTED JALAPENOS, CHICKPEAS AND TAHINI
This dip was our favourite. We love Hummus and we love anything with jalapenos so this was a win-win. The hummus was smooth and delicious and we all know how hard it is to find good hummus in Singapore. The jalapeno added a kick to the flavours but wasn’t over powering. Just perfect with the pita on the side.
AVO PESTO: FRESH MINT, CORIANDER, BASIL, FETA, AVOCADO, ALMONDS AND A LITTLE GARLIC
This is a must-try. It’s very different to the usual dips served and we had no preconceived notions about it. The avocado is serves a base but there is such an explosion of flavours once you take the second or third bite, you just keep going on, every bite is packed with flavour!
ROASTED EGGPLANT: WOOD FIRED ROASTED EGGPLANT, RED PEPPERS AND ONIONS WITH EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL
If you love eggplant, you will love this dish. It has a mildly smoked flavour and beats any Middle Eastern dip I have ever tried with eggplants. This was flavourful, cooked just right and very comforting.
All the above dishes are priced at $12, including a serving of sourdough or pita bread.
CRISPY ARTICHOKES: CHARRED WITH SWEET BALSAMIC GLAZE AND WALNUTS
Even if you aren’t a fan of artichokes, this dish will change your mind. They were tangy, done just as artichokes should be cooked and nothing like the bits you remove from your pizza topping, tangy and flavourful.
ASPARAGUS STICKS: GRATED PECORINI, LIME AND CHILLI
Forget the asparagus you eat unwillingly as diet food. Cheese, lime and chilli added to this vegetable take the flavours to a whole new level. You will order seconds.
VEGETARIAN BRUNCH
If you’re interested in Sideways Brunch selection, they offer vegetarian options:
Spanish Eggs ($18): scrambled eggs with sage on sourdough toast, mushrooms and sprouted spicy salad
Strawberry fields ($16): cream cheese on sourdough toast, poached strawberries, pistachio and mint
Turkish Smashed Avo ($18): sourdough toast, jalapeno hummus, smashed avo, poached eggs, roasted peppers and lemon
There are plenty of vegetarian options as this place isn’t Halal. However, great care is taken to prepare all the items separately so there is no contamination.
However, if you are a steak lover, the Sideways Rib Eye Steak is certified halal! And prepared separately to the non – Halal meat. So yay!
