BTS, a group of seven young boys, is a Korean Pop band from South Korea. It stands for ‘bangtan-sonyeodan’ which translates into ‘bulletproof boy scouts’. According to J-hope, they wish to be the “resistance against the bullets of prejudice that target their generation” and thus the name! In English, it means ‘Beyond the Scene”.
In 2013, they launched their debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. Soon after that, their videos sky-rocketed and they bagged several awards.
According to a report, BTS contributes “an estimated amount of 4 trillion won ($3.54 billion) as economic value to the country per year”. Needless to say, this band generates a huge chunk for Korea’s economy.
Global Stardom
In 2018, for the Billboard Music Awards, the Korean group mingled with popular American celebrities like Taylor Swift.
From appearing in several American award shows to performing at the Times Square on New years Eve, BTS has garnered over 40 million followers on social media. They are even said to have topped Justin Bieber, Niki Minaj and Rihanna!
Moreover, their album, “Love Yourself: Answer” sky-rocketed the U.S charts so much so that the South Korean President, Moon Jae-in, himself congratulated the boys on Twitter.
What Makes BTS So Different?
A mix of western, jazz, folk and country music, K-Pop is a genre that was born in South Korea in the 1990s. However, the band is popularly known for bringing together elements of pop, hip-hop, rap, funk, eye-catchy fashion and slick production values. To top it off, their super synchronized choreography and dance performances are just truly phenomenal and a treat to watch!
Social Consciousness
They are the first ever K-pop group to speak at the United Nations in 2018.

Not only do their lyrics highlight social issues like bullying, depression and anxiety that youngsters face, but BTS has also played a role in giving charity and donations for a cause. Recently, in the wake of #BlackLivesMatter movement, they donated $1 million dollar to support black communities and to stand against racial discrimination. In collaboration with UNICEF, they also launched an anti-violence campaign to promote the message of love, peace and acceptance.
Wondering What is Meant by the BTS Army?
Well, that’s the official and unique name for BTS fandom. It stands for “Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth,” which symbolizes military army and hence ties into their vision of being a bulletproof armour. All their fans are referred as the Army!
A Way to Connect With Them
Given that they have such a massive fan-base, BTS tries to connect with them as well. For this, they interact with their fans on social-media. Recently, they wrote a song that was dedicated only to their fans. It was written in an attempt to show gratitude to them; to thank them for their constant loyalty and dedication.

During Namjoon’s solo performance, words in different languages appeared on the screen and some of them had words from our native Urdu language, such as “Ishq” and “Mohabbat” signifying ‘Love’. This spurred a sensation among the BTS Army in Pakistan who, under the banner of #BTSOurMohabbat, out-poured their love for the band.
