Akshay Kumar
Akshay Kumar in Laxmmi Bomb

Laxmmi Bomb – The upcoming horror-comedy movie’s trailer featuring Akshay Kumar & Kiara Advani in lead roles is out now. It’s releasing on 9th November on Disney + Hotstar!

Laxmmi Bomb’s trailer gives insights about the movie’s gripping plot of Akshay Kumar’s character being possessed by a ‘jin‘- that too of a transgender! The reccurring mysterious events makes his wife (Kiara Advani) and her family horror-struck!

What’s more captivating than knowing it’s a copy of a similar Tamil-Telugu movie ‘Muni 2-Kanchana’

The Tamil movie’s plot is similar – portraying a transgender as non significant and trivialized.

The trailer of the horror – comedy movie Laxmmi Bomb is as cringe as it sounds!

The unwanted and annoying music in the background, where Akshay Kumar says:

‘Jis din sach mein mere saamney bhoot aya na… tou maa kasam chooriyan pehenlunga‘

This dialogue itself is so problematic on so many fronts, we are at a loss where to begin! It’s so irksome and I truly believe that a large part of the audience might be bursting with rage over the treatment of an age-old sensitive topic – trying to reflect transgenders as funny and sexist.

Is Bollywood even ready to treat such a sensitive topic?

Akshay Kumar has left us star struck with several of his performances; standing up for women’s rights for eg: Padman, Toilet, etc. He willingly signs scripts which are usually based on social issues. However, his recent choice doesn’t seem to be going down quite well!

The confusing plot of the movie portrays a transgender in a scary yet humorous way, the characterization seems to imply that most of the trans people behave this way. (How does that look okay?). Is it supposed to paint an insensitive, comic caricature of an entire community – a parody of how trans people are perceived by the general population? Do the film makers expect audiences will still find it funny? (Doesn’t seem so)

Akshay Kumar
Is Bollywood trying to portray a trans-person as both funny & unacceptable?

Scene to note: Akshay Kumar wears a red sari & people are making fun of him in the background when he is slapped for the (appalling) act!

Is Bollywood trying to portray a trans-person as both funny & unacceptable? The trailer seems to normalize reactions of fear and aggression when we encounter a transgender.

Laxmmi Bomb’s Trailer Seems To damage the Social Movement Calling For Rights Of The Trans Community!

The distorted implication of their lives reflected in a movie will lead to grave consequences faced by them. Mental health issues, rejection & much more!

Even Twitter Can’t Handle The Trailer Of Laxmmi Bomb!

Laxmi bomb is another disgustful attack'on Transgender Community
It will make our lives more measurable

Akshay Kumar's portrayal of a transgender person is reducing transgender people to a joke, an object of comic relief, and even objectifying them for the male gaze. #LaxmmiBomb #TrailerReview #Opinion https://t.co/ptReVYdyz2

Following #LaxmmiBombTrailer *ing #AkshayKumar – an important question which I think needs to be addressed regarding #Transgender representations in #Bollywood. My special feature for @FilmeShilmy. https://t.co/KxmGcUgnnt

My question to society…

Till when are we going to keep treating trans people as a vent for comic relief? Till content creators do not want to change their perception and the manner in which they portray marginalized communities, times will regress. We need to step out of the tunnel and feel the light – and cinema has a huge role to play in eradicating cob-webbed mindsets – Bollywood itself has zero excuses for bailing out on this one!

Let’s hope the script in full, successfully identifies and supports a social cause that needed to be addressed yesterday! The trailer hasn’t done much to promote that view. If the full story is any different in the 2 hour + long film, then perhaps Laxmmi Bomb needs a new trailer.

And if it isn’t, perhaps the film makers shouldn’t have gone there in the first place?
