The Oscar nominations are freshly in and already making waves – Here’s why!

On Monday, 15th March, the Oscars Committee revealed the highly anticipated nominations for this year and they’re groundbreaking!

1. Riz Ahmed makes history

Pakistani origin actor, Riz Ahmed has been nominated for the Best Actor in Lead Role category for his role in Sound of Metal, directed by Darius Marder. Riz has made history by becoming the first ever actor of Pakistani descent and first Muslim to ever be nominated for this category.

2. Keeping Chadwick Boseman’s memory alive

Last August, we were all struck with the news of the untimely demise of Chadwick Boseman, aka Black Panther. While Boseman won a posthumous award at the Golden Globes, he has been nominated at the Oscars for the Best Actor category for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

3. Steve Yeun, the first Asian American for Best Actor nomination

Steve Yeun, who made it big after The Walking Dead, has become the first Asian American to be nominated for Best Actor. His role in Minari has lead to him bagging a nomination in this category.

4. Pixar’s Soul leads Oscar nominations

Soul has been nominated for Best Animated Feature, Best Original Score and Best Sound. The film recently bagged the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature.

5. Viola Davis breaks records

Viola Davis has now officially become the first ever Black actress for the most nominations for her Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. This is surely an empowering message for all! More power to you girl!

Youn Yuh Jung bags historic nomination for Minari. She has become the first Korean to be nominated for this category. 73 and thriving!

7. Female directors are up for grabs for the Best Director Award

For the first time in 93 years (since Oscars started), in 2021, there are TWO female directors up for grabs for Academy Award for Best Director.

Chloe Zhao has been nominated for Nomadland while Emerald Fennel is up for Promising Young Woman.
