With rumors about the release of ‘The Legend Of Maula Jatt’ making rounds on social media, we break down the reasons behind the delay of one of Pakistan’s most anticipated films and when it is predicted to release. Scroll down for details!

‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’ has been in the news for several years – whether it is for its star-studded cast, immaculate production, or for being a modern remake of the classic 1979 movie ‘Maula Jatt’. Now, once again the movie is surrounded by various rumors of an anticipated release date of 29th September 2022. The makers, however, refuse to make any comments and the producer of the film Ammarah Hikmat shared this on her Instagram: “This time no announcements, only surprises!” This assuredly has only added to our excitement!
Well, as we wait for the movie to be FINALLY released in the cinemas, let’s go back in time and answer the million-dollar question: What took the movie a decade to be released?
A Decade Back In Time
According to The Express Tribune ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’ was initially announced in 2011. Then, on 14th December 2013, Bilal Lashari announced that he will be directing Maula Jatt and said:
“This will be my take on gandasa films which are blamed for the death of Lollywood. I think the gandasa genre was a missed opportunity for Pakistani cinema, and what better choice to utilize it than by paying homage to the cult classic Maula Jatt.”

Bilal completed the script of the film in 2014 and in 2015 he announced that he will begin the shooting of the film in Lahore. He also revealed that the film will have a new story but dialogues will be taken from the 1979 classic.
On the remake, Bilal Lashari commented,
“My version of Maula Jatt will be a visual epic, with less dialogue and many captivating moments. It will be a dark but stylized take on Pakistan’s original film genre.”
A trailer for the film was released on 21st December 2018 with a release date of Eid-ul-Fitr 2019. However, the release was halted after the producer of the original ‘Maula Jatt’, Sarwar Bhatti, filed a case over copyright infringement, claiming that his company ‘Bahoo Films’ owned the rights to the Maula Jatt story. Later, according to Wikipedia, a settlement was reached between the two parties in February 2020, after which the film was scheduled to be released in Pakistan and China simultaneously on Eid-ul-Fitr 2020, but was postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, the film is once again making the rounds on social media and we are expecting a release date soon. Fingers crossed!
