Pyari Mona is coming up on our TV screens tomorrow and we’re wondering if this Sanam Jung starrer will hand out a story that hits different from the toxic male hero, saas- bahu and extra marital affair narrative that has taken over our drama culture.

Who’s Steering The Project?

There’s enough in the teasers to make sure we watch the first episode, and possibly more. With direction from recently aired Paristan’s Ali Hassan and written by Haseeb Ahmed, the project is a HUM TV, Momina Duraid production.

Not The Same Old

We have often complained that our stories are not youth-oriented enough, and even when they are, they reflect unreal or regressive ideas that leave young people devoid of role models, or even fail to reflect their real lives in a manner they find relatable.

Pyari Mona aims to shed light on the very current topic of body shaming, our obsession with looking a certain body type, fitting into impossible and often unforgiving stereotypes that leave no room for those who do not fit!

Youth Relatable?

Pyari Mona also aims to change all that by portraying the struggles of many young girls who struggle with weight loss, or who are happy in their skin, yet society makes them feel they can’t.

The Challenge

It is important to point out that although our dramas have now begun to explore newer realms, areas, topics of conversation that are more relevant to youth culture around us and the challenges they face, is the narrative they churn out going to hit the right flavor palate or end up being a diluted version of the original objective, recent dramas Dobara and Bakhtawar have fallen victim to the same.

It is interesting to note that the same industry that is often accused of limiting our mindsets by picking fair-skinned female leads or actors who fit into a certain dress size is now attempting to debunk the same mindset. And why not? Change begins from home. But will the change be relevant, relatable and lasting? That’s what we’re about to find out. Hence, although we have high hopes from Pyari Mona because of the promising storyline, we hope the message therein carries enough bite to sink our teeth in and really, really change mindsets, or at least, get people thinking. Such is the competition for out of the box storylines that nothing less will work really.

The teasers so far hint at Muhammad Hunbal of Sang e Mah and recently Wabaal to possibly play against Sanam Jung. Too much reveal? Wait and watch if what you see is what you get!

Questions

Presently, there has been some muted criticism directed at the main character Mona played by Sanam Jung for wearing a fat suit to play the character. While Parizaad had fallen prey to the same criticism, the content itself and subsequent performances threw that objection out the window. We hope the same is true for Pyari Mona.

So go ahead and watch the journey of a young girl who struggles with society’s perception of how she should appear to be if she is to land a worthy match, a life devoid of perpetual judgements and image concerns, and much more. Coming up on Thursday 19th January at a screen in your living room!
