When you watch a Pakistani drama play out and the female character inspires you to be the best you can be in your life, you know she’s nailed the role, she’s reached across the screen to capture your heart & she’s done it for millions of other women watching her across the globe too!
These are the characters that stand out among the rest – women in dramas do not always have to be the submissive wives or the becharis in the story line. Women can & do defy norms – true, there’s not enough of them, but let’s celebrate the ones who are getting it right!
Here are 4 strong female characters who capture the best women can be onscreen!
1. Hajra in Inkaar – Fighting For Her Rights
Moral of Hajra’s story: Fight for your rights
Yumna Zaidi portrayed Hajra, a young girl who is stabbed the night of her wedding by Rehan, reason being, rejection. After that, it’s Her vs The Law. With the help of her father, she manages to get the justice she deserves. What makes Hajra more appealing to audiences is that she’s not perfect. Her fallibility makes her more human – and eventually, she learns from them too.
As the drama was allegedly based on a real life story, it makes it more impactful for the audience.
2. Anaya in Sabaat – The Working Girl
Anaya is a strong minded woman, who is straight-forward, career focused, mindful of tradition, yet not fearful of speaking her mind. Anaya’s financial independence alongside her support and understanding of her husband’s insecurities spoke volumes for how women who succeed in their careers might have so much emotional luggage to deal with at home.
She also set examples on how to deal with workplace harassment – many women can gain strength from a character well-rooted in the ideals of what millenial women want, yet, often struggle to achieve.
3. Dr. Zubia in Yakeen Ka Safar – Keeping Hopes Alive
Capture the essence of a woman, and you have captured the heart of all of them. Sajal Aly depicted our favourite Dr. Zubia flawlessly. Zubia was a victim of domestic violence and emotional trauma – girls going through similar circumstances might relate. What they can learn from this powerful character is that no matter what life throws at us, we can pull through and achieve our dreams – and without becoming cynical or despondent about our future – keep the hope alive!
4. Kashaf from Zindagi Gulzar Hai – Transforming Lives
Kashaf, played by Sanam Saeed showed us that we don’t always have to be dependent on men to make it in life. After graduating from university and passing her CSS exams, Kashaf was instrumental in transforming her family’s fortunes through hard work & determination. Even after marriage, she continues her job in a different city and didn’t turn to Zaroon when she faced financial hurdles.
Kashaf – a strong willed working woman who doesn’t need a man to lean on, but one who can walk beside her. Girls, there’s so much to learn from this character!
P.S. Zindagi Gulzar Hai is one of our all time favorites, so why not watch it again?
