Harmless Fun Or Hurting Sanctity Of Marriage? Twitter Reacts To LUMS!

Half the population was convinced it was a real wedding while the other half wonders why they are having a mock marriage.

Viral Mock Wedding By LUMS Students

LUMS (Lahore University of Management Sciences), inarguably Pakistan’s top institution is trending and no, not for a record broken or an accolade but for starting a new trend in university extracurriculars – taking extra curriculars a step ahead. So, let’s breakdown what actually happened!

As per the videos that have now gone viral, it turns out that for their annual senior day, 2 seniors were selected through a group voting as bride and groom. This move eventually turned out to become an entire wedding fiasco. Wedding festivities were arranged at the campus where all senior students came together to dance, sing and celebrate with traditional rituals set in place.

It wasn’t just pretend play, they were so invested, they had 3 major events, the Baat pakki, Mehndi and Shaadi. From phoolon kay haar(garlands), to feeding mithai to the bride & groom, special entries for the bride/groom, choreographed dances to even special filters made for the mock wedding. It seemed way more fun than an actual shaadi. Though to be noted, there were no fake nikkah namas involved for those wondering, but looks like Pakistani Gen Z has found a new way to enjoy weddings without the stress and commitment. All the students participating as guests were dressed to the nines.

It does take us back to the days when we used to pretend play with our friends and cousins. Twitter seems to be divided as many found it to be harmless fun while others were fuming over students drifting away from education and/or dampening the institute of marriage. We share the public’s opinion on this new trend below. Tell us what you think:

Normalizing Be-Hayai?

There must be another good way in which we can live our life. For this, we must not normalize be-hayai.

Questioning The Norm

Fake marriages and dance parties: Are they becoming the new norm in universities like LUMS? Is this what we define as “Education” in today’s society?

Marriage is A Sacred Union!

Sorry but I don’t find this appropriate at all. Marriage is a very sacred union and somethings aren’t to make fun of. This is so embarrassing to even watch. I think as a society we have lost it. Sigh!

New Elitist Trend?

We used to do our doll’s wedding when we were children as these elite kids didn’t experience that fun in their childhood so they are doing it rn.

While many seem to be bothered we also see another POV from our general public, not deeming the viral fake wedding as inappropriate.

Why Are We Against Joy?

In Pakistan students have been lynched, assaulted, filmed without permission, pushed to take their own life, but people have problem with LUMS students enjoying their time in university. I don’t know why, collectively we are against joy, we only seek satisfaction in misery.

Not Just Students But Family

You think it’s not fun, Its incredibly amazing, Why did I not get into Lums, literally regretting not being there! It’s less like a university batch and more like a family.

Nothing wrong With Re Living Our Childhood

Man, I love it, they look so cute. We used to do these kinda things when we were kids like gudda guddi ki Shaadi, so why not now? I know they’re not gudda guddi though but still, waise bhi life mai thoda halla gulla (fun) hona chahiye. I am obsessed with it.

Making Memories

Yesterday was a core memory in my four years of lums. the whole batch if not the entire campus was there together, doing the whackiest most insane shaadi festivities. the effort that was made: everyone dressed up, proper dances were prepared, setup, entrances were insane so much love.

What are your thoughts on this? Is it simply harmless fun for people to make memories or do you think there has to be a line drawn somewhere when it comes to planning ‘fun’ events on campus. Let us know in the comments below.
