Hello Weekend and the dramas that I love to watch – Kuch Ankahi, Yunhi, Pyari Mona. Muhabbat Gumshuda Meri and now … maybe, Zara Noor Abbas in Jhoom? Tere Bin fans don’t scratch my eyes out, will get to you too, coz Waqas was rocking it and Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha is just something we will do because, well, Wahaj Ali apparently said “It has just begun” which ahem… after 20 episodes you gotta believe the guy, yeah? Coz’ he IS Wahaj after all!

Week in Dramas, Pakistani Dramas
The Week In Dramas

Anyway, let’s start with Pyari Mona, only because that’s the chronological order of things as we see it – Thursday is our day (Tere Bin hold your horses), you have been switching too many days so you’ll have to wait.

Babar Obviously Doesn’t Get The ‘Pyari’ In Mona!

Someone give him a pair of binoculars please.

Pyari Mona
Week in Dramas: Pyari Mona

You see, there is obviously no comparison between (Un)pyari Zee and the way she’s treating him and our pyari Mona. But the recent twist in the drama is making me question the premise upon which it was founded. Now that Zee will abandon Babar, will he make his way back to Mona after treating her like, well … not the way she deserves. Also, would we really want Babar back in her life after what he did, can we see him as a responsible father and above all, a sensitive human being? He’s failing to be both right now.

Dramas flip characters and make them cross a boundary till they reach the point of no return, and then they expect us, the audiences to witness their redemption and acceptance by the very character they spurned earlier and believe me, it is a very painful task. The ordeal requires us to become endlessly forgiving humans and if we were to experience the same in real life, we probably wouldn’t touch this character with a 10 foot pole – there, I’ve said it!

Babar is a jerk, the scum of the earth and he doesn’t deserve Ayan or Mona. He is also responsible (partially) for Samiya’s death and learning his lesson at the cost of other (innocent) people’s misery is just unfair. As much as the state of this country I believe!

Up next …

Jhoom – The Drama Everybody’s loving Calling Out

First Look Jhoom
Week in Dramas: Jhoom – Aryaan and Dr. Maryam

So Jhoom kicked off its first couple of episodes with Zara Noor Abbas aka Dr. Maryam and Haroon Kadwani aka Aryaan in the lead. But folks y’all either loving this larger than life, cinematic version of a drama or, calling out the makers for nepotism. Here’s the deal, just watch the story unravel, follow it or bid good riddance. There are soooo many options in the pipeline that trust me, one drama ain’t going to make the world stop or talent roll over on its head to stop the factory from churning out Wahaj Ali’s, Hamza Sohail’s (oops, nepotism there too … you say?) Sajal Alys, Bilal Abbas and more … the pie is large enough for everyone to get a piece and with the onslaught of Green Entertainment never you mind, channels will be pushed to deliver.

Anyway, when I last checked, Jhoom episode 2 had amassed nearly 8M views and you know what, there’s two opinions in this world, some are liking the show! So onwards to the story.

Dr. Maryam and Aryaan cut quite a cute couple onscreen. The story is fast paced and the age difference and anger management (2 reigning issues in the script) have been dealt with well so far. Maryam carries a calmness which is directly opposite to Aryaan’s thunderous emotions. Maryam also carries a brother who is equally taken over by emotion and on the wrong side of the law. Where the drama charms one into watching, mainly because of Zara Noor’s sparkling onscreen presence and her ability to romance her co-stars onscreen, Haroon has a following of his own. He might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he seems to be holding a little bit of his own against Zara.

Here’s what piques me. Most star kids start out with smaller roles and grow onto audiences but not this one. He has been launched big most of the time (Ruposh) and hence, he will have to win audience love through talent, skill and performance. No star kid can make it big after a certain number of projects unless he proves his mettle. Haroon already has a sizeable following hence, he has a promising future and will hopefully be taken on by other production houses with diverse story lines. The story is youth oriented, the element of anger management is actually very relevant amidst young people today and it remains to be seen how this one will be tackled. Hopefully, many are watching and hope to see how the story unravels.

Muhabbat Gumshuda Meri Is Winning Cute Romance Points

What else woud you expect from Khushhal Khan x Dananeer?

Mohabbat Ghumshuda Meree
Week in Dramas: Mohabbat Ghumshuda Meri

Saim and Zobia are not only best friends but now, in love too. The cuteness overload between these two is so very relatable for young couples – finally a story that is youth relevant and with the right casting. The issues addressed should also strike a chord with young people as guns, violence, gang fights, blackmailing over photographs, etc etc and amidst all this, the intensity of young love with endearing performances keeps this one on my radar at least for now.

On the downside, didn’t quite appreciate the way Saim refuses to listen to Zobia and uses (very) strong phrases like “I’ll kill you” left a bad taste in the mouth and I hope this one doesn’t stretch too far. Do love the setting, the scenic surroundings and the overall vibe of the cinematography so keep watching unless Saim turns super toxic!

Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha Is Just Too Painful To Watch Now!

From Maheer crying, weeping or just sporting a sad expression to Saad sporting an even sadder expression, Mujhe Pyar Hua Tha was really quite unbearable to watch.

Mujhe Pyaar Hua Tha
Week In Dramas: Mujhe Pyaar Hua Tha

This is an example of a promising story, characters, relationships gown downhill, in fact, right into the ditch. Saad is your unreal man who keeps on suffering and Maheer is your paper doll who suffers in silence but then performs all the wrong actions when she is prodded into activity like, visiting Areeb in the hospital, taking his calls and staying quiet when Neelo abuses the life out of her.

Our dear Neelo on the other hand, is a loose cannon, raging over a situation she has zero control over. I do want to point out here, for all those clapping Neelo for her meltdown at the funeral, she has probably hurt the people she loves most – aka her mom and Saad at the funeral of a dear family member. And while her anger might be valid, it needs to be in control. I for one, loved the way her mom spoke to her and asked her to put a lid on the histrionics.

Neelo’s reaction can also be justified on the premise that Maheer has shown to be repeatedly making mistakes and taking erroneous decisions (and Saad’s zombie like reactionary, self sacrificing state of mind and body) which has, of course, led Neelo’s fiery tongue into action. Hence the support for Neelo’s otherwise insane behaviour since she spoke the mind of many viewers who just can’t take MPHT anymore, It’s time the drama called it a day, especially as no one in their right minds wants to see Maheer and Saad together anymore. It’s a matter of too little too late. Sorry folks, this one has been written off!

A word of advice: Hania Aamir you have huge potential if only you would step out of Mere Humsafar and MPHT zones to take on more diverse roles please! Note to casting directors too please!

Tere Bin And Haya Gets Away Once More!

The story was all about Meerab and Murtasim but now, is it just about waiting for Haya to pay for what she did? Justice delayed is justice denied yeah?

Tere Bin
Week In Dramas: Tere Bin

Waqas has left the Khan family with many revelations. And all this because no one spoke to Mariam earlier? Just goes to show, communication gap is a relevant basis for an entire drama script and that’s what the episode drove home. No one knew (apparently) that Meerab did not know Anas is not Malik Zubair, no one also knew that Mariam met her lover inside the confines of her own home and … surprise surprise, no one STILL knows that Haya was the mastermind behind Mariam’s perilous elopement. Agreed Meerab supported her to elope but Haya could have prevented it from happening, but she let the circus continue and the price could have been much, much higher.

Tere Bin story writing defies logic, undermining audience intelligence and making us pine for a Meerab-Murtasim reunion which, in fact, is not on the cards anytime soon as Rohail dives in yet again to save the day! Ho hum, what can I say. Let’s just enjoy Wahaj Ali on the screen with his multiple expressions while we wait for the story to wind its way eventually to where we want it to be.

In the meanwhile, we hope Meerab will not be shown, again, to commit more errors of judgement, appear more foolish and simple and yes, naive! But perhaps, we expect too much. So just sit back and enjoy the drama for what it is, a drama after all folks, and don’ take it to heart. All will be well, but … if Haya doesn’t get what she deserves, this story will go down in history as the most ludicrous of them all. Do you agree or y’all too obsessed with the main leads to notice the Hayas of this world?

Yunhi Is Picking Up Beautifully

Yunhi is all about Dawood and Kim finding their way with each other. The latest episode was such a winner in all the right ways!

Yunhi Drama, Maya Ali, Bilal Ashraf
Week in Dramas: Maya Ali and Bilal Ashraf in Yunhi

From Kim disclosing her Quran teacher’s far from happy experience to Dawood admiring her desi feels, from Razia lamenting Basharat’s harsh words to a pact of friendship and getting to know each other before anything more transpires between our main leads, Yunhi is winning finally – dair aaye par durust aaye.

Perhaps the one factor that touched me the most was the way in which Dawood, though clearly smitten by Kim, is willing to give her all the space and time she needs. Dawood is handing out great husband goals to men who are like him – religious, orthodox, traditional, brought up in a hugely patriarchal setting and yet, willing to listen to another POV! Kim, on the other hand, might be the harder party to welcome change but I feel Dawood will lead by example and together they will fit in to each other’s life expectations like a glove – eventually. After they’ve knocked off a few sharp edges for sure. But then, that’s the conflict that’s adding the fun in Yunhi! Keep watching because these two are showing us how it’s done – great onscreen chemistry and I feel some romance is on the cards!

Kuch Ankahi is Breaking The Mould On Relationships And Cute Romance

Kuch Ankahi is all about finding a happy place in relationships and respecting them by respecting yourself first!

Kuch Ankahi, Bilal Abbas Khan, Sajal Aly, Sajal Ali, Sheheryar Munawwar
Weekk in Dramas: Kuch Ankahi starring Sajal Ali, Sheheryar Munawwar and Bilal Abbas Khan

From holding her own before Azfar to coming full circle with Salman, Aliya shows us what she’s made of. Despite feeling intimidated with a very intimidating boss, despite being cornered financially) she needs the job – despite perhaps, having lost her heart to Salman, she keeps her nerves and her self respect intact with both men in her life. Bravo for a character that’s written so sensitively and thank you Sajal Aly for playing it so well!

There are men like Azfar and men like Salman in our lives, and both men might seem polar opposites of each other, but when it comes to women, and the one their heart desires, they tend to get a tad controlling (desi) you say? But Aliya knows that and Aliya will manage them (as Sehrish believes) because she has a father who has given her that confidence to believe in herself and that desire to succeed. Aliya is ambitious, yet principled, speaks her mind although she might take too many risks, but Aliya also has an endearing charm, a femininity that many working girls will relate to. Finally, a female character has been written in a male dominated world, who manages to keep her own without resorting to unnecessary dramatics or distress mode. Aliya can fix her car if she wants to, Aliya has no time for unnecessary drama as she’s too busy earning a living yet Aliya can love, and here is where the drama is at a precipice now. Will she ultimately give he heart to Salman or Azfar?

My guess is Salman though Azfar is a close second!

The latest Kuch Ankahi episode also threw us some cute romantic moments, get them all here. I personally loved Saqib Sumeer’s take on the nikamma good for nothing husband who refuses to work even if offered gainful employment – parasite mode, as is the case with a large part of our population. Saif’s possible change of heart has us anticipating what happens next with him and Shagufta and, will we want Samiya, clearly the more superior partner, to stay on with him?

And that’s it folks for the week in dramas – A lot of drama for the weekend! Enjoy while you can till Green Entertainment takes over your prime time with more dramas about to unfold on your TV screens, and if you want a Netflix recommendation from me, try an old one, Anatomy of a Scandal is a limited series everyone should watch!

Ciao and Adios!
