Heeramandi is a historic locality in the walled city of Lahore, near the Badshahi Mosque and Lahore Fort. It was once known for its grand mansions and havelis, many of which were built during the Mughal era. Thus, these buildings were owned by wealthy merchants, aristocrats, and courtiers, who used them as residences, guest houses, and places of business. Hence, several literary stories have been made on the life of the people living in this famous locality.
The Story Of Heeramandi
Heeramandi is a novel written by the renowned Indian writer Amrita Pritam. It was first published in 1971 and is set in pre-partition Punjab. The story revolves around a courtesan named Heeramandi and her relationships with various men, including a young man from a wealthy family. Hence, the main lead is depicted as a strong, independent woman who is unapologetic about her profession and her lifestyle. She is a skilled singer and dancer who is much sought after by men from all walks of life. However, despite facing discrimination and social stigma, she continues to assert her identity and lives life on her own terms.
The novel offers a vivid portrayal of life in the red-light district of Lahore and provides a glimpse into the social and cultural milieu of pre-partition Punjab. Moreover, it also touches upon themes such as love, desire, and the pursuit of happiness.
It is said that the web series is based on the original novel as well, giving portrayal of a woman who defies societal norms and lives life on her own terms. Moreover, the series will be a reflection of the larger socio-political landscape of pre-partition era.

It’s very ambitious, it’s very big, it’s very vast. It tells you the story of the courtesans, pre-independence. They kept music, poetry and dance, and the art of living. The politics between the brothels and how to emerge as the winner. It’s a difficult one, but I hope we come across with flying colors this time.

The Cast Reveal Of Heeramandi
The teaser has been making rounds on the internet and shows glimpses of the beautiful and talented actors who will be portraying the complex characters in the show. Heeramandi web series will feature actors Manisha Koirala, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Segal, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, and Sonakshi Sinha. The cast itself is depicting a very woman centric story which is what Heeramandi is known for.

I really wish relations between India and Pakistan were normal this would have allowed Sanjay Lees Bhansali to visit Lahore along with his team and work with local Pakistani Artist to collaborate with Indian Artists on this Project of Heeramandi Story Telling based on the Amrita Pritam novel and Moin Baig script
